Fatsia japonica
The classic false castor oil plant — bold, glossy, deeply lobed evergreen leaves on a tropical-feel shrub that holds its shape and presence year-round. Reaches up to 2.5m tall and wide, brilliant for shaded courtyards, large pots, or as a statement focal point in a town garden, with unusual creamy ball-shaped flowers in late autumn that pull in late-season pollinators. Tolerates dry shade once established and bounces back from a hard prune in spring if it outgrows its spot.
